Evening study explained
Birkbeck is London’s only specialist provider of evening higher education. With classes held between 6pm and 9pm, your days are free for you to study, work, volunteer, or just do your own thing.
Our academics are very experienced at supporting students who juggle busy lives and our facilities and support services stay open late.

Indian Student testimonial: Saloni Krishnan, MSc Cognitive Neuropsychology and Neuroscience
Saloni Krishnan has been interested in psychology and its beneficial impact upon human life since she was a youngster growing up in Chennai, India.
The 27-year-old’s decision to come to London to embark on the Master’s programme in Cognitive Neuropsychology and Neuroscience, was sparked by her lifelong interest in improving treatment for young people with developmental disorders.
I wanted to do a Master’s, and I really liked the Birkbeck programme, because of its strengths in developmental psychology and neuroscience. One of the strengths of Birkbeck is it offers the opportunity to explore fairly diverse fields. I ended up with a PhD that allowed me to develop a wide set of skills to then use as leverage for the next step of my career.
I think coming to London and doing the Master’s and PhD was one of the best decisions I’ve made.
The reputation of the Birkbeck’s Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (CBCD) — where I carried out my PhD — outside of the country has been an eye-opener. Birkbeck is really well recognised in psychology circles and I didn’t realise that in India.
I probably realised during the first year of my PhD when going to conferences and speaking to other people I worked with. One of my supervisors, Professor Annette Karmiloff-Smith, is an eminent developmental psychologist, and when I would go to conferences and workshops, people would recognise her name and influence on my training.
One of the things I really like is that the professors at Birkbeck were not content with what they already understood, or the boundaries of current knowledge. They always wanted to push the boundaries and ask “How do we explain the way this might work? What’s next“.
