The University of West Alabama offers a unique opportunity for students in Nigeria to pursue their academic dreams in the US. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide the personalized attention and academic rigor of a small private school (2,000 students on campus and 14-1 student to teacher ratio), but at an affordable price. We have a beautiful 2.5-km2 campus with a .25-km2 lake. The campus is located in the southeast US within traveling distance of New Orleans, LA, Memphis, TN, Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA, and the Gulf Coast beaches.
We are the safest, the most diverse, and the best value university in the state of Alabama. We have over thirty countries represented with 8% of the student population as international. This is the highest percentage of international students at any university in the state. Most students live on campus in one of our many dormitories. We have a fitness center, swimming pool, and many activities for students. The university has collegiate athletics such as soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, American football, baseball, softball, track & field, cross country, and rodeo.
Students have the ability to explore a variety of academic options (over 90 program options). We offer everything from two-year associates degrees, four-year bachelors’ degrees, masters’ degrees, education specialist degrees, and doctorates in rural organizational leadership and rural teaching and learning. Our programs of particular strength to international students are Quantitative Finance and Econometrics (QFE), Finance, Applied Engineering (Engineering Technology), and Integrated Marketing and Communications (IMC). These programs have job shadowing opportunities, internships, and OPT (STEM and non-STEM) possibilities with international companies in Alabama (e.g., Mercedes, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Airbus, Daikin, EOS, etc.). Many graduates from these programs move on to top 100 ranked graduate programs and/or job opportunities with Fortune 500 companies. Undergraduate majors in Biology (Medical Track and Conservation Track), Psychology, History, Music, Exercise Science, Computer Science, Sport Management, Accounting, Sociology, Management, English, and Business Administration are also popular with international students. We also have well-rated graduate programs in Psychology (three tracks), Conservation Biology, MBA (8 tracks), Education, Integrated Marketing and Communication, and Counseling. Professors in these programs have acquired millions of US dollars in grants for research and are highly published scholars.
Our F-1 visa acceptance rate is incredibly high. We accept many different English Proficiency exam scores (e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Cambridge, GTEC, and TOEIC), and our English language proficiency score minimums are very competitive (e.g., 61 TOFEL). We also offer English language support. International students are eligible for certain types of scholarships. The Office of International Programs at UWA is at your service. We are happy to answer questions, assist you in the application process, help you settle into campus life, and support you while you are at UWA.
