Sheffield Hallam University
Sheffield Hallam University is the 6th largest university in the UK, with over 31,000 students studying over 700 courses. Sheffield Hallam University is one of the UK’s largest providers of health and social care education and there are over 3,000 students studying on our nursing and allied health related courses each year. We have a very high graduate employment rate (98%) across our undergraduate and postgraduate courses and we also offer a number of courses via distance learning. There are two main departments who provide our health courses.
Allied Health Professions
The Department of Allied Health Professions (AHP) encompasses all the Faculty’s Department of Health contracted-courses except Nursing and Midwifery.
Radiotherapy & Oncology: We’re leading the UK sector in delivering distance learning radiotherapy education. It’s an extremely popular course with 190 pre-registration students studying on our undergraduate course and around 500 professionals undertaking our post-registration training.
Diagnostic radiography: Our diagnostic radiographers are based in a fully-equipped x-ray suite, mirroring the clinical setting in which they will be based and are taught and supported by practicing radiographers.
Occupational Therapy: Sheffield Hallam’s 140 undergraduate Occupational Therapy students undertake four work placements covering areas such as physical health, mental health, working in the community and a non-traditional setting such as a brain injury rehabilitation clinic.
Operating Department Practice: Sheffield Hallam is currently the only University in the UK that gives ODP students the chance to complete an award in health improvement from the Royal Society of Public Health.
Paramedic Practice: With around 200 students, the diploma course is one of the UK’s first in paramedic practice and is run in conjunction with the NHS Ambulance Service Trusts of Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
Physiotherapy: With approximately 300 full time students, physiotherapy is the largest of our Allied Health Profession courses. Our undergraduate course includes clinical placements in a range of settings from acute hospitals to sports clubs. Our postgraduate course can be taken in Sheffield full time with clinical experience or completely by distance learning.
Nursing and Midwifery at Sheffield Hallam
Courses: Providing education and training in midwifery and all fields of nursing, including, adult, child, mental health and learning disabilities, our £13million facilities, simulation mannequins and mock wards have been praised by the Nursing and Midwifery Council. 50% of our students’ time is spent on placement within a healthcare setting with 96% of nursing and midwifery students securing work or further study within six months of graduating.
Augmented Reality: Sheffield Hallam University is the UK’s first higher education institution to use cutting edge technology that assesses empathy and compassion in healthcare students. Augmented reality has been introduced into the University’s nursing and midwifery curriculum which sees videos of patients, played by actors, superimposed onto training mannequins. The video of the patient is overlaid onto the dummy via an iPad tablet and provides a ‘real’ account of a patient’s symptoms and experience. It is designed to give trainee nurses a range of scenarios to test their reactions and patient communication skills.
